Search is changing. Most businesses are confused. What happened?
Plain answers about what is actually happening to search, why your website matters more than it did five years ago, and what any of it means for a small business. No jargon, no scare tactics.
People stopped scrolling. They started asking.
For twenty years, being found meant ranking on Google and hoping for the click. Now a growing share of people type their question into ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's own AI answers, read the reply, and never visit a website at all. The answer names two or three businesses. There is no page two.
You are either in the answer or you are invisible
When someone asks an assistant to recommend a service in your town, it names a few businesses and stops. If your site is not something those systems can read and trust, you are not one of the names, no matter how good your Google ranking used to be.
The old playbook was built for a different machine
Keywords and backlinks were designed for a search engine that ranks pages. AI systems work differently. They read your structured data, your business details, and how clearly your pages state what you do. Most tools still only do the old job.
Four places, one job.
Being findable is not one channel anymore. It is four overlapping surfaces, and they all read the same underlying signals from your site.
Search
Traditional ranking still matters. Google is not gone. It is just no longer the whole game.
AI answers
When an assistant answers a question directly, something has to decide whether it answers with you.
Voice
Siri, Alexa, and in-car assistants read from structured data most websites never set up properly.
Local results
For a local business, your listing details decide whether you win the moment someone searches nearby.
The common thread
All four read the same structure. Fix it once, properly, and you show up in more of them at the same time.
The catch
None of it works if the site underneath is broken, slow, or unusable for a chunk of your visitors.
A site that works for everyone works better for everyone.
Web accessibility gets talked about as a legal issue, and it is one. It is also the same work that makes a site readable by machines. Clear headings, labelled buttons, described images, sensible structure. Screen readers need it. So do the systems deciding whether to recommend you.
The standards already apply to your website
Accessibility on the web falls under the ADA, and the standards behind it are not new. What has changed is how routinely small and medium businesses receive demand letters over it. You do not have to be large to get one. You have to have a website that does not work for everyone.
The fix is the same fix
Describing your images helps a blind visitor and tells an AI what your page is about. Clean headings help someone navigating by keyboard and help a search engine understand your structure. There is no version of this where doing it properly only pays off once.
Straight answers to what people ask us.
The questions we hear most from small business owners, answered plainly.
Does AI actually affect whether customers find my business?
Yes. When someone asks an AI assistant for a recommendation, it names a small number of businesses drawn from what it can read and verify about them. If your website and your listing details are unclear, incomplete, or unreachable to those systems, you will not be among the names it gives.
Is my website required to be ADA compliant?
Web accessibility falls under the Americans with Disabilities Act, and businesses of all sizes have received demand letters over inaccessible websites. It is not a filing you complete or a certificate you buy. It is a standard your site either meets or does not, and it is enforced mainly through claims brought by individuals. This is general information, not legal advice.
Do accessibility overlay widgets make my site compliant?
No. An overlay is a script that changes how a page appears at the moment someone visits, without changing the underlying code. Courts have repeatedly found that overlays do not satisfy the underlying obligation, and the original problems remain in the site itself. Some overlays also trap keyboard users, which creates a new accessibility failure of its own.
Is SEO dead now that people use AI?
No, but it is no longer sufficient on its own. Google still drives an enormous amount of traffic, and traditional ranking still matters. What has changed is that ranking well on Google no longer guarantees you appear when someone asks an AI assistant the same question, because those systems read your site differently.
What is structured data, and why does it keep coming up?
Structured data is information written into your website in a format machines read directly, rather than guessing at from your page text. It states your business name, location, hours, services, and the questions your pages answer. Without it, search engines and AI systems have to infer those details, and they often infer them wrong.
How long does any of this take to work?
Technical fixes such as structured data, crawler access, and accessibility repairs are usually readable by machines within days of being applied. Visibility gains build more slowly, because search and AI systems revisit sites on their own schedule and weigh consistency over time. Anyone promising a specific ranking on a specific date is guessing.
Should I do all of this, or just pick one thing?
If you want to actually be found, all of it. These are not four separate projects. They are four parts of one job, and each one limits the others when it is missing. Content nobody can find does nothing. Being found sends people to a site that has to work when they arrive. A site that works still needs something worth recommending on it.
That said, doing something beats doing nothing, and almost nobody starts with everything. Find out where you actually stand, fix whatever is costing you the most right now, and close the rest of the gaps as you go.
